R1 Surgical Skills Lab Rotation
Overview

Description:
The surgical skills lab rotation was created to allow residents extensive opportunity to practice and consolidate skills that will allow them to engage in authentic roles in the operating room. Successful completion of the rotation will be communicated to the faculty members in subsequent rotations so they can adjust your engagement in the operating room. The resident will also participate in central line placement and robotic cases (as available). The resident is subject to jeopardy call during this rotation.
The rotation is built around self-directed learning where you determine the schedule and sequence of your learning, and that you read relevant materials to be able to explain the equipment needed for the skill. As self-directed learners, you are expected to analyze your own learning so that you can articulate where you need to improve.
Goals:
Achieve competency in technical skills through self-directed practice in a structured curriculum with faculty guidance as needed. The goal is to provide the environment and support needed as the resident develops their own self-directed approaches to meeting the targets set for each skill.
Objectives:
At the end of the rotation the resident will be able to
- Explain how to perform the skills used in open surgery, line insertion, robotic and laparoscopic operations.
- Compare and contrast various equipment options including energy devices that may be used in performing these skills.
- Analyze strategies that facilitate skill improvement.
Learning Activities
- Receive orientation and onboarding to LAPP and robotic curriculum during the intern orientation
- Identify instructions and resources for each skills activity
- Complete LAPP basic curriculum
- Complete FLS didactic course
- Schedule and complete FLS exam by the end of the one-month rotation
- Complete Robotic SimNow curriculum/modules by reaching set benchmarks (complete MANDATORY GS ROBOTIC module)
- Complete Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) modules and pass FUSE exam
- Complete open foundational surgical skills curriculum by reaching set benchmarks using the GoReact website
- Maintain a logbook of your observations of what you have needed to do to improve skills
- Participate in port placement cases on Tuesday mornings with Dr. Tammy Chang
- Participate in baseline and final assessment of skills at end of rotation
- Participate in robotic cases as available at Bayfront
- Weekly check in with rotation leadership to ensure progress and address questions that may arise
Expectations:
- Come to skills lab during the day to complete LAPP curriculum
- Schedule in advance with faculty if extra help is needed.
- Complete pre-survey, daily surveys, and post-survey
- Suggested practice time: 2 hours/day each on open/lap/robot for 3-4 days. We anticipate the equivalent of a half day/week of IR and a maximum of one day/week of jeopardy)
Performance outcomes:
- Meet benchmark standards for all tasks
- Complete post assessment of laparoscopic skills

Interventional Radiology (IR)
Faculty lead: Tammy Chang

Description: Tuesday is dedicated to working with Dr. Chang learning how to perform central lines.
Objectives: Perform central access procedures with Dr. Chang and other interventional radiology faculty (including IJ, subclavian, femoral, PICC) during the month
Jeopardy
Faculty lead: Kenzo Hirose
Description: You will cover intern-level shifts at Parnassus and ZSFG when there are deficiencies due to resident illness/family emergencies, etc.
Jeopardy Requirements:
- 4 weekend days off and 1 weekday off per month (protected from any jeopardy call)
- Maximum three 12-hour shifts per week
- No 24 hour shifts
- Must have 24 hours notice prior to night shifts (subject to change)
- Potential jeopardy roles: MB Gold R1, MB HPB-GISS R1, ZSFG Trauma R1, UC Vascular R1, UC LTU R1, UC KTU R1, UC Red R1, UC Complex GS (Galante) R1
